Do I need planning permission when replacing my septic tank?

We recommend contacting your Local Authority before making any changes to your wastewater treatment system. The EPA provide detailed guidance on planning matters relating to replacing existing wastewater treatment systems here.

Can I replace my existing septic tank with a new septic tank?

Absolutely. However for the replacement system to meet the EPA CoP (and likely the planning conditions) the site must have been deemed suitable for a septic tank based on the Site Suitability Assessment results. Site with poor percolation typically require more advanced systems (such as bioCycle’s) to achieve compliance with regulatory guidelines and to minimize risks to human health and the environment.
